Below you’ll find answers to the questions we get asked the most about applying for private examinations.

Location

Where is your examination centre based?

We are based solely in Whitechapel /Aldgate (East London), although our students travel to us from across the UK.

Are there any hotels near the exam centre?

There are many hotels, guest houses and B&Bs local to our examination centre – we can send you an up-to-date list of all accommodation near our centre, if required.

Exam Registration

How do I register for examinations?

There are two ways to ensure the registration for your place to take an exam at this centre:
Firstly, you can click on the following link, which will take you to our online application form in which you should fill in all the relevant details:

Secondly, if you wish to come in person, you can visit us at our centre, along with your passport/driving license (for ID check) and one passport sized photograph. We recommend candidates to come into the centre, so that in case of any enquiries, the exam officer can help you and complete your exam registration straightaway.
Centre staffs are available to help at every stage of the process.

When can I take my examinations?

Exam availability is dependent on the subject, board and level that you wishing to take. Please see our Private Exam Centre page for further details.

When will I receive my examination dates?

You will receive a Statement of Entry (that lists your examination dates), as well as other important examination documents in the months prior to your first examination. Typically, these documents are sent to students sitting examinations in November by late-September, in January by late-October and in May/June by mid-March.

Private Exams

When do your Modern Foreign Language oral examinations take place?

All GCSE, IGCSE and A-Level oral examinations will take place between March and April (i.e. prior to the written examinations in May/June).

I wish to take some GCSE/IGCSE qualifications. Which would you recommend?

We cannot recommend specific qualifications as the decision remains with you although we can advise on the options available. Please note that access to further and higher education and employment are often dependent on gaining specific qualifications most typically passes at GCSE English and Maths. IGCSE qualifications (the International GCSE that is deemed the equivalent of the GCSE qualification across the world) have become increasingly popular and have been adopted by many private and state schools in the UK due to this qualification being based entirely on examinations.

Do I need GCSE qualifications in order to take A Level examinations?

A GCSE pass is not a requirement to sit A-Level examinations at our centre;however we recommend considering arranging some focused one-to-one tuition in order to strengthen the key GCSE skills required for A-Level examinations.

Do I need to study a course or receive tuition from Excel Tutors to sit ?

It is not required for candidates to enrol or to attend any classes with us in order to sit their exams at our centre in London; you can simply study independently (either self-study or study through a distance learning provider) and attend at our centre on the relevant examination dates.

Do you provide tutoring service to prepare for examinations?

If you wish to take tutoring sessions at our centre to help prepare for your examinations, we can arrange for a focused one-to-one tuition provided by a subject-specialist tutor.

Do you offer GCSE and A-Level Modern Foreign Language oral examinations?

We offer oral examinations for a wide range of GCSE, IGCSE and A-Level Modern Foreign Languages, which include French, Spanish, Italian, Bengali and Arabic.

Do you offer Functional Skills & English exams?

We currently offering Functional Skills English and Maths for Entry Level 1, 2 and 3, and Level 1 and Level 2 for the OCR exam board.

How many qualifications can I take at once?

There is no restriction on how many qualifications you can take in one examination series.

Payment

How do I pay for my examinations?

You can pay for your examination fees by debit / credit card, cash (if registering in person) or bank transfer. Please note that in order to successfully register, you must submit the payment in full.

Do you offer any discounts to students that take multiple examinations?

Our current prices include an ‘Early-bird discount’ which applies for those who register with us early. Please see our Private Exam fees page for further details.

Professional Exam

How can I book AAT exams?

Registration for AAT exams can be taken through the phone, email or by completing our online application form and requires the payment of the exam fee.We take AAT exams every week on Wednesday and Thursday at 10:30am and 1pm.

Do you offer any discounts to candidates for AAT exams?

We offer a 10% discount for the first AAT exam you take with Excel Tutors.

How can I book Pearson VUE exams?

You can book your Pearson Vue examinations through the Pearson Vue website.

When can I take my Pearson Vue examinations?

Pearson Vue exams are taken every week on Monday, Tuesday and Fridaybetween 10:30am to 3:30pm.

About Examination

What time do exams start?

All morning examinations start at 9.30 AM and afternoon examinations start at 1.00 PM.

Can I choose what day I take my examinations?

Unfortunately you cannot choose what day to take your examinations as the dates are set by the examination board and must be followed by us, the centre. The only exception is Functional Skills examinations, which are available to take at our centre every week throughout the year.

Do I need to attend all dates listed on my Statement of Entry?

It is vitally important that you attend all the examination dates listed on your Statement of Entry.

Are there any age restrictions for taking examinations at your centre?

We support students of all ages. We have supported students as young as 7 with GCSE Maths and Science examinations and individuals in their 80’s with various qualifications that were of interest.

What if I have two examinations scheduled for the same time and day?

If you have two or more papers timetabled for the same session and the total time is more than that recommended by the examination board, you will sit an examination in an earlier or later session within the same day. But you will remain under supervised invigilation throughout the day until you have completed all your examinations.

Result

How will I receive my exam results / when will I receive my certificate?

GCSE, IGCSE and A-Level results are supplied in the form of a Statement of Results, which is sent via email as an attachment on results day. Formal certificates are provided by the examining boards 8-12 weeks after the results have been published. We will re-contact you once they are received, as we do not provide posting services and must be collected from our centre.
